Being an integral part of the mission of the Catholic Church, EREA continues the tradition established by the Christian Brothers in 1868. Founded in 2007, EREA has become a Public Juridic Person and has operated as a canonical entity since 2013.

Edmund Rice Education Australia is an integral part of the mission of the Catholic Church. From 1868 until 2007 the educational outreach of the Christian Brothers in Australia was under the direct leadership of the Christian Brothers. In 2007 the Christian Brothers delegated day to day leadership and management of their schools to Edmund Rice Education Australia. In 2013 Edmund Rice Education Australia became a Public Juridic Person with approval to operate as a canonical entity within the community of the Catholic Church.
